There were some somewhat farcical scenes as Mexico took on Uruguay in a Copa America warm-up match in Denver, USA on Wednesday.
What happened on the pitch took something of a backseat as scenes off the pitch that spilled onto it made the headlines for the wrong reasons.
Bentancur was part of the Uruguay side facing off against Mexico in the friendly clash in the States ahead of their participation in the Copa America.
The two nations are in different groups for the tournament, which starts on June 21, and the match in Denver showed one team is more prepared than the other.
Striker Darwin Nunez bagged a hat-trick, with Manchester United star Facundo Pellistri getting the other as Uruguay routed the Mexico team 4-0.
But scenes in the crowd threatened to overshadow what was a very strong performance from Marcelo Bielsa's team and a poor one from Mexico.
The Mexican fans made their feelings known on two separate occasions, ruining the spectacle.
With Mexico 4-0 down, the match had to be stopped by the referee in the 54th minute due to disruptive behaviour in the crowd.
According to reports, alleged homophobic chanting from the stands led the referee to temporarily halt the match.
After getting things under control, the match was allowed to continue, but that was not to be the end of it.
With 89 minutes on the clock - having just been substituted right before - a number of supporters stormed onto the pitch.
With it being a friendly, the referee made the decision to halt the match there, with Mexico 4-0 down and the score unlikely to change in injury-time.
A chaotic match from start to finish should have seen Nunez making the headlines, but his hat-trick was marred by the actions of some supporters.
It is going to be a busy summer at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Ange Postecoglou looks to make his mark on and improve on the fifth-placed finish of 2023/24.
