The US State Department has denied claims of CIA involvement in a plot to assassinate Venezuela's leader, Nicolás Maduro, after Venezuelan authorities arrested six foreigners, including a US Navy SEAL.

The State Department called the allegations 'categorically false' and stated that the United States continues to support a democratic solution to the political crisis in Venezuela.

Venezuelan authorities claimed the plot was led by the CIA and aimed at assassinating Maduro.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello identified the purported Navy SEAL as Wilbert Castañeda and named two other detained Americans: David Estrella and Aaron Barrett Logan.

Cabello also mentioned the arrest of two Spanish citizens and one Czech citizen, along with the seizure of 400 US rifles linked to the alleged plot.

The US State Department confirmed the arrest of a US military member in Venezuela and acknowledged unconfirmed reports of two additional US citizens detained.

The Spanish embassy has requested access to the detained citizens to verify their identities and understand the accusations against them.

The Czech Republic's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the detention of a Czech citizen in Venezuela.

Venezuela is still dealing with the aftermath of its presidential election in July, which saw Maduro claim a third term despite global skepticism and opposition outcry.

The National Electoral Council of Venezuela declared Maduro the winner, but the opposition insists the vote was stolen.

The US and the European Union have expressed skepticism over the election, with the EU describing the Maduro regime as 'dictatorial and authoritarian.

'In response to the election, the US imposed sanctions on Venezuelan officials aligned with Maduro and seized a plane used by Maduro for international travel.
