A multi-camera comedy series is being developed, starring a stand-up comedian.
The project, which attracted interest from multiple networks, is from the creator of Kaling International, Hartbeat, and Warner Bros.
Television.
Written by Garg and Hunt, the series features Zarna (Garg), a proud immigrant woman who has been raising her American-born children with Indian values.
Now that her children are getting older, it's time for her to focus on her own American dream.
The story mirrors Garg's own life.
She immigrated from India to the U.
S.
as a teenager, earned BA and JD degrees, and spent 16 years as a stay-at-home mom before her children encouraged her to try stand-up comedy, launching her comedy career.
Zarna's experience parallels that of Leanne Morgan, who also started a stand-up career after raising a family, and now works with veteran comedy writer-producer Chuck Lorre at Netflix.
Hunt, who serves as showrunner, and Garg are executive producers along with Kaling and Jessica Kumai Scott via Kaling International; Howard Klein via 3Arts; and Hart, Bryan Smiley, and Mike Stein via Hartbeat.
In May, Garg wrote on social media about meeting Kaling for the first time.
Garg, who was with her daughter, must have made an impression, as just four months later, a project she and Kaling collaborated on was sold to a network.
At CBS, Warner Bros.
TV has had a string of comedy series from Lorre, the latest being an upcoming spinoff.
Figuring out a drama business template between the two companies has proven more challenging, with the latest project not making it past the deal-making stage.
Garg was featured in the 2022 Apple TV+ series hosted by Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton.
Her debut comedy special premiered on Prime Video last year.
The Indian immigrant experience is often reflected in Kaling's work, most notably in her Netflix series.
Hunt recently developed and executive produced the Fox comedy series based on a British format.
Mindy gives us hope that one of us can achieve at that extreme level.
I joke about never allowing my kids to become writers because there are no jobs in writing, especially for Indians.
When they push back and point to data to make their case, they inevitably list examples like Kaling.
