Dame Lisa Carrington has added an eighth medal to her extensive collection of Olympic accolades after cruising to victory in the women's K2 500m event with Alicia Hoskin.

The Kiwi crew finished the race in one minute and 37 seconds, well ahead of the competition, successfully defending their title from Tokyo.

No other crew could match the prowess of the kayak queen, and she and Hoskin shifted into another gear after the midway point, leaving the field behind by a boat length.

In a fierce battle for second place, Hungary secured the silver medal, while Germany and another Hungarian crew shared the bronze.

Carrington expressed her joy, saying, '[It] will probably take a little bit to sink in, but it's the paddling I love and I love this team.

Nothing could ever beat that feeling.

' Hoskin praised her teammate, calling her an incredible supporter and friend, and expressed her amazement at being able to compete alongside her.

Hoskin also mentioned that she was so focused on paddling that she didn't realize where the other boats were or how close the fight for second place was.

'I didn't really know what was going on back there.

I was locked in on Lisa and just trying to trust our strategy and our race and have a really good paddle.

I didn't really realize how close it was, but I'm not surprised.

These girls are amazing and prepared extremely hard as well.

'In other news, a shot putter mentioned that being a silver medallist doesn't sound too bad after achieving a personal best but narrowly missing out on the gold.

Meanwhile, golfer Lydia Ko heads into the final round tied for first place.
