A former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, has launched the 'Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa Foundation' with an initial capital of N1 billion.
During the launch event held at his residence in Sokoto on Wednesday, Bafarawa expressed that this initiative is his way of giving back to the people of the state who entrusted him with the opportunity to serve as a two-term governor.
Bafarawa mentioned that he has mixed feelings when he reflects on his tenure as governor.
He acknowledged that thoughts of potential misappropriation of funds, whether through acts of omission or commission, can be troubling and prick the conscience.
He believes this situation calls for restitution and asked for forgiveness for any shortcomings in meeting the people's expectations.
He reminisced about the overwhelming support he received from the voting population of Sokoto State, which allowed him to serve as the first executive governor after the military era.
He appreciated the historic opportunity to serve the people for eight years and emphasized that he did his utmost to deliver the dividends of democracy, particularly in infrastructure and road construction.
He also ensured prudent management of the state's resources, leaving N13 billion in the state's coffers when he left office in 2007.
Bafarawa confessed that he entertains mixed feelings each time he looks back on his years as governor.
While acknowledging the people's love and solidarity, he feels that he can do more in giving back to the people.
He noted that the enormous powers of an executive governor come with temptations to transgress, and it is possible that actions taken may not have always served the best interests of the public.
These thoughts can be troubling and prick the conscience, leading him to feel the urge to reconnect with the people in other ways.
He emphasized that his giving back philosophy is driven by a latent sense of missed opportunity.
Regardless of his efforts to improve the people's lot while in office, he recognizes his human limitations and seeks forgiveness for any shortcomings.
He reiterated his commitment to the people of Sokoto State and his concern for their well-being.
Bafarawa expressed his delight that his relationship with the people has remained intact for 17 years after leaving office.
At 70 years of age, he feels a greater pull towards the people and desires to fill any gaps created during his tenure.
He sees this as an act of reciprocity rather than atonement and aims to give back the goodwill and love shown to him.
Given the current harsh economic climate, Bafarawa decided to make N1 billion available for the welfare and well-being of the people of Sokoto State.
He entrusted the management of this fund to a committee he personally set up, headed by Alhaji Lawal Maidoki, known for his acumen, experience, and honesty in dealing with similar issues.
The committee, assisted by trusted members from various strata of society, is responsible for delivering on its core mandate, focusing on the pressing needs of vulnerable communities, especially in areas such as food, shelter, water, and clothing.
