Ireland - Web content about Daniel Wiffen
57.
20, completing his first-ever open-water race.
Wiffen joins a small group of Irish athletes who have competed in different events at the Olympic Games, including Terry McHugh and Martin Early.
Wiffen said he would never do the race again, but he might consider it if his twin brother Nathan wanted to try.
He was pleased with his performance in the open water, despite waking up at 4 am, which he described as one of the worst things he had done.
He was happy with his achievements in the pool, having set his sights on becoming an Olympic champion and winning a bronze medal.
After the race, Wiffen planned to party for three days, attend homecoming events in Dublin and Magheralin, and then go on holiday to Barcelona, Bali, and Italy.
He looked forward to having fun before returning to training for the world short course championships.
With a sense of fulfillment and the clang of gold and bronze medals in his pocket, Wiffen left the event with a lightened step.
