Former Prime Minister Liz Truss abruptly left the stage at an event in Suffolk promoting her book after campaigners unfurled a remote-controlled banner behind her.
The banner displayed the phrase “I crashed the economy” below a picture of a lettuce.
Truss, who lasted 45 days in office, was discussing the US presidential election when the prank occurred.
She called the prank “not funny” and described the campaign group, Led By Donkeys, as “far-left activists” who use such stunts to intimidate people and suppress free speech.
Before the prank, Truss expressed her support for Donald Trump, stating, “I support Trump and I want him to win.
” She mentioned that the average American is not doing well and referenced Bill Clinton’s adviser’s famous phrase, “It’s the economy, stupid.
” She predicted that Trump would probably win the election.
As the host expressed confusion about the source of the banner, some audience members laughed, prompting Truss to mutter, “That’s not funny,” before ripping the microphone from her dress and walking off the stage.
She received applause from some as she left.
The lettuce image and joke originated from the final days of Truss’s premiership, when a tabloid ran a live stream to see if Truss’s tenure could outlast a 60p iceberg lettuce from Tesco.
Truss was promoting her memoir, 'Ten Years to Save the West,' when the prank occurred.
On social media platform X, Truss stated that the event had to be stopped for security reasons and accused the activists of trying to intimidate people and suppress free speech.
Truss has become vocal on US politics, recently addressing Republican supporters and urging them to learn lessons from her brief time in office.
She criticized the British media for being particularly vociferous and not deferential to politicians.
The banner stunt came shortly after Truss voiced her support for Elon Musk, who has claimed the UK has a two-tier policing system.
Truss praised Musk and X for standing up to what she described as bullies.
Musk responded by thanking her for her support.
