North Queensland Cowboys assistant coach James Maloney has been dismissed from his position on the eve of the NRL finals due to a drink-driving charge.

Maloney, who has previously won premierships with the Sydney Roosters and Cronulla, joined the Cowboys this season after concluding his playing career in France.

The club's general manager of football, Micheal Luck, confirmed that Maloney is no longer employed by the club, describing the departure as amicable.

Maloney expressed his disappointment in himself and acknowledged that his mistake had become a distraction for the club.

Despite this setback, the Cowboys have shown impressive attacking performance this year, with players noting the positive impact Maloney has had on the team.

He has been instrumental in making players more accountable and improving communication on the field.

The Cowboys, currently in sixth place, are set to play against Canterbury away on Saturday night.
